Director's Statement:
Beat Heart Break didn't begin as a story concept, but as a film concept. I wanted to watch multiple frames of exposed film simultaneously and within a new environment. After numerous tests, I developed a technique of projecting backgrounds onto glass while animating film strips above, thereby stacking various layers of visual elements. After a successful music video, I felt confident enough to push this method into the narrative world, and within a few weeks an old story idea of mine turned into a script.

Principle photography began and ended, then began again, and this film has been shot and edited twice over. With film-making there are always unknowns that drastically change the look of a piece. The challenge here was working with a new set of unknowns; unpredictable and often frustrating. But the excitement of changing the film-making palette, of mixing the paint and using a new set of colors has been worth all the angst, and was always a purpose of this film.
